Chapter Six
âSo what are you going to do about it?â Lisa announced boldly in Raeâs office.
It was the last Monday in January, and Eve was several minutes late in arriving due to an accident that blocked her from leaving her apartment complex. She hadnât slept well all weekend, and she definitely wasnât ready for Lisa taking advantage and trying to justify her behavior at the event on Friday night.
âEve is my assistant,â Rae statedâand not for the first time. âYou know that at these things, she has my full confidence and authority to direct any and all of you. If she felt that you werenât doing your fair shareâand you forget, dear, Iâve spoken to you before about excessive flirtingâthen there must have been justification.â
As Eve laid her purse and briefcase on her desk, and began unbuttoning her coat, she watched Lisa square her shoulders. Uh-oh, Eve thought. Here it comes.
âItâs not fair. Iâve been here longer. I should have been made assistant. Besides, I sold more tickets in fifteen minutes than she and Honor did together.â
âWhich, of course, had nothing to do with the cut of your sweater,â Eve said, entering Raeâs office. âWould you like the door closed?â she asked her.
Rae glanced through the window at the others, who werenât making the slightest pretense of not eavesdropping. âNo, I think weâre about done here.â To Lisa, she added calmly, âWeâll miss you, of course, but if youâre not happy here, then you need to move on to someplace that better suits your goals. What I will do is give you the day off to think about it. Youâre an extremely attractive young woman and when you can contain yourself, youâre an asset to this company. But youâre too easily swayed by your passions. Thatâs why you werenât offered the position.â
Tears of indignation flooded Lisaâs eyes. âNow that youâve humiliated me in front of her, how am I supposed to continue working here?â
âBy being the mature young woman that I thought Iâd hired.â
âIâll take that day,â Lisa snapped and walked out. She barely paused to grab her jacket and purse, and rushed from the office.
Eve waited until the front door eased shut behind her before quietly closing Raeâs. âIâm sorry. Iâd hoped sheâd realize over the weekend that sheâd made a big mistake, but apparently something else is going on with her.â
âYes, PMS,â Rae muttered. She took a sip of coffee from her mug and grimaced. âTepid already, and I loathe nuked coffee.â
âConsidering how supportive you were of me and my position, Iâll happily go over to the café and buy you a cappuccino or espresso.â
âThanks, but I really have had enough caffeine. Sit down and tell me what has you looking like youâve been hugging the porcelain throne all weekend? Did you catch a bug?â
Although Eve sat, she was less eager to respond. She wasnât sure she was ready to fill Rae in on what else had happened.
