Chapter Six

“So what are you going to do about it?” Lisa announced boldly in Rae’s office.

It was the last Monday in January, and Eve was several minutes late in arriving due to an accident that blocked her from leaving her apartment complex. She hadn’t slept well all weekend, and she definitely wasn’t ready for Lisa taking advantage and trying to justify her behavior at the event on Friday night.

“Eve is my assistant,” Rae stated—and not for the first time. “You know that at these things, she has my full confidence and authority to direct any and all of you. If she felt that you weren’t doing your fair share—and you forget, dear, I’ve spoken to you before about excessive flirting—then there must have been justification.”

As Eve laid her purse and briefcase on her desk, and began unbuttoning her coat, she watched Lisa square her shoulders. Uh-oh, Eve thought. Here it comes.

“It’s not fair. I’ve been here longer. I should have been made assistant. Besides, I sold more tickets in fifteen minutes than she and Honor did together.”

“Which, of course, had nothing to do with the cut of your sweater,” Eve said, entering Rae’s office. “Would you like the door closed?” she asked her.

Rae glanced through the window at the others, who weren’t making the slightest pretense of not eavesdropping. “No, I think we’re about done here.” To Lisa, she added calmly, “We’ll miss you, of course, but if you’re not happy here, then you need to move on to someplace that better suits your goals. What I will do is give you the day off to think about it. You’re an extremely attractive young woman and when you can contain yourself, you’re an asset to this company. But you’re too easily swayed by your passions. That’s why you weren’t offered the position.”

Tears of indignation flooded Lisa’s eyes. “Now that you’ve humiliated me in front of her, how am I supposed to continue working here?”

“By being the mature young woman that I thought I’d hired.”

“I’ll take that day,” Lisa snapped and walked out. She barely paused to grab her jacket and purse, and rushed from the office.

Eve waited until the front door eased shut behind her before quietly closing Rae’s. “I’m sorry. I’d hoped she’d realize over the weekend that she’d made a big mistake, but apparently something else is going on with her.”

“Yes, PMS,” Rae muttered. She took a sip of coffee from her mug and grimaced. “Tepid already, and I loathe nuked coffee.”

“Considering how supportive you were of me and my position, I’ll happily go over to the café and buy you a cappuccino or espresso.”

“Thanks, but I really have had enough caffeine. Sit down and tell me what has you looking like you’ve been hugging the porcelain throne all weekend? Did you catch a bug?”

Although Eve sat, she was less eager to respond. She wasn’t sure she was ready to fill Rae in on what else had happened.
